ON THIS DAY… 06 SEP 1988
I START THE OUTRIDER TOUR IN ATLANTA, GA

This marked the first date of my first solo tour in the United States primarily. The band comprised of John Miles, vocals and keyboard, Durban Laverde on bass and Jason Bonham on drums. These guys had featured on my Outrider album and we were to feature material from that album and from my past going back to The Yardbirds.
Also on this day in 2008, ‘It Might Get Loud’ premiered at the Ryerson Theatre in Toronto, while in 1968, I arrived in Denmark prior to our first show of the Scandinavian tour for Led Zeppelin.

ON THIS DAY… 24 AUG 2008

On this day in 2008, I performed at the Olympic closing ceremony at Beijing, where the baton was passed on, so to speak, to London 2012. The cast members had been secretly rehearsing in London and Beijing. Armed with the double-decker bus, ballet, hip hop dancers and David Beckham, Leona Lewis and I performed ‘Whole Lotta Love’, augmented by Phillip Shepherd’s string arrangement and Prenderescki-like swoops. Along with many, I had been intoxicated by Leona’s performances on The X Factor and I was curious as to how she would approach ‘Whole Lotta Love’. Her classy delivery was sultry and impeccable, and her visual performance, dazzling to say the least! This was without doubt, one of the high points of my career, and it was one happy man who performed with such a remarkable talent.

I received an honorary Doctorate Of Music at The University of Surrey

Today’s the summer solstice, and in 2008 I received an honorary doctorate of music at the University of Surrey at Guildford Cathedral.
I had visited the Cathedral before in my Epsom choirboy days, but over forty years later receiving this degree was a moving experience for me and my family, who were also present at the ceremony. The University had some cool facilities and students were up to some interesting music, with sound engineers graduating in digital and analogue recording.

I PERFORMED AT WEMBLEY WITH FOO FIGHTERS

During the post-O2 period, I had been playing new material with Jason Bonham and John Paul Jones at rehearsal rooms. I was asked to play with the Foo Fighters at Wembley. This was after the Led Zeppelin show at the O2 attended by Dave Grohl.

On this day in 2008, John Paul Jones and I played ‘Ramble On’ and Dave sang with Taylor Hawkins on drums. Then Taylor swapped drums with Dave and he sang ‘Rock and Roll’. Dave Grohl said “You guys should come to the States and record with us”. I didn’t hear anything more from Grohl, and John Paul Jones’ communications seemed to dim. The next I heard, they were promoting their new group.

ON THIS DAY… 09 APR 1969
LED ZEPPELIN PLAYED THE TOBY JUG IN TOLWORTH

This venue was a Charrington’s pub, with a small events room at the back - the sort of thing that would have serviced wedding receptions for small families. It had become a recognised rock gig venue and Led Zeppelin played it.
The Toby Jug was just outside central London on the A3 road, by the Tolworth Bypass. In fact, the roundabout was known as the ‘Toby Jug roundabout’. I went back to visit this musical cauldron in the 90s, and wondered how we got an audience in this small space at all, even with the limited equipment at the time.
David Bowie’s first night of the Ziggy Stardust tour was here: he must have been brave.
The Toby Jug was demolished in 2008, taking with it the musical imprint of Led Zeppelin and the Spiders from mars.
From our notes, the dates was performed of the 9th, some people say it was the 16th - it was a long time ago and I don’t remember!

I WAS IN TOKYO TO PROMOTE MOTHERSHIP

In 2008 I was at the Park Hyatt in Tokyo, Japan to promote the Mothership album at a Press Conference. This was the hotel that featured in Sofia Coppola’s remarkable ‘Lost in Translation’ with the luscious Scarlett Johansson.
