ON THIS DAY… 26/01/2009

I WAS IN MYANMAR

Today I travelled from Bagan, Mandalay back to Rangoon and then on an evening flight back to Bangkok, Thailand. Here is a small selection of photos from my day in Myanmar.

I was in Myanmar

It had always been an ambition of mine to visit Burma, now Myanmar, and on this day in 2009, aided by a visa processed by the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok, I was in Rangoon, soon to travel to Bagan.

When I applied for my visa in Bangkok, I was asked if I was going to perform a concert in Myanmar and I assured the gentleman I was not. In fact, I was to leave my guitar there in Bangkok. The official said he hoped I was telling the truth because if not he might get into trouble.

I hope my photographs (of Rangoon, Bagan and Mandalay) convey just some of the visual splendour and mystery of this country.

I CHECKED THE PROTOTYPE FOR THE NEW GIBSON NUMBER TWO LES PAUL

On this day in 2009, I checked a prototype from Gibson, along with my guitar tech Lionall and Steve Hoyland (who did the original custom wiring), for what was a soon to be released Number Two Les Paul.

The original had been customised to allow new routing of the pickups by splitting the coils to employ new configurations, with two push-button switches attached to the scratchplate and push-pull adaptation to the volume and tone controls. This gave more variety of tone and out of phase settings.

This edition came out in January 2010 and sold out immediately!

I PLAYED ON FRENCH TV IN PARIS WITH LED ZEPPELIN

On this day in 1969, I played the TV programme ‘Tous En Scene - Antenne Culturelle du Kremlin-Bicêtre’ in Paris with Led Zeppelin. The two songs that were featured in various TV shows and TV series to promote the bands work with reference to the first album were ‘Communication Breakdown’ and ‘Dazed and Confused’. With some of these TV shows at the time, it became more obvious that wanting to perform our material live and the quality of the TV recording just wasn’t working - like mixing oil and water.

Also on ths day, in 2009, I met the gorgeous Miss Alison Mosshart from The Kills, and recently with Jack White’s Dead Weather at the LA Film Festival. I’d seen the band premiere at the Roxy two days before.

I INDUCTED JEFF BECK into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

I was asked to participate at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, to give an induction speech for Jeff Beck. Jeff deserves all accolades for his musical contribution. There are many guitarists, then there is Jeff Beck. We had some fun that night with ‘Bolero’ and ‘Immigrant Song’, and we soundchecked ‘Bolero’ that afternoon. But the idea of the ‘Immigrant Song’ was discussed and mapped out later at the hotel and in the car on the way to the ceremony. He and his band were exhilarating and a thrill to play with.
