I appeared with Robert Plant on the Andrew Denton Show

On this day in 1994, I appeared with Robert Plant on the Andrew Denton Show on the Seven Network in Australia during the ‘round the world’ promo for Unledded. We incorporated some didgeridoo players to help us through a version of ‘Sun Arise’ which was a tribute to Rolf Harris. Andrew Denton was a very bright man and on his previous award winning series ‘The Money or the Gun’ each of the 26 shows had a special guest invited to do anything they wanted providing it was ‘Stairway To Heaven’ and consequently, ‘Stairway’ moved into the genres of Opera, The Doors, theatrical monologue, The B52’s and amongst others, Rolf Harris. So, for those who heard Rolf Harris’ amusing version in isolation, you may now get the idea of Denton’s master plan. It was an amusing idea and good to be on his show to share the humour.

THE JAPANESE VERSION OF ‘HOW THE WEST WAS WON’ WAS RELEASED

On this day in 2003, I went to Japan to promote the Led Zeppelin DVD ‘How The West Was Won’. There was a screening of an edited showcase promo of the Led Zeppelin DVD and a Question & Answer session in Tokyo with me.

The video source is ‘Immigrant Song’ from 1972. Led Zeppelin had played in Japan and then went to Australia where the visuals of this come from, the sound source is from California and the mixing was done at Sarm Studios (previously Island Studios - a former playground of Led Zeppelin - in London).

ON THIS DAY… 29 FEBRUARY 1996
I WATCHED JEFF BUCKLEY IN MELBOURNE

Jeff Buckley was something of an etherial spirit: a musical magician whose ‘Grace’ album showcased a unique talent. His name was on the lips of all musos from the release of that album and for the next two years.
I had heard him sing a couple of songs at a distance on the Other Stage at Glastonbury, where Page and Plant were headlining: you could feel him, it was extraordinary. I had listened intently to ‘Grace’ whilst I was on tour and made a point to see him at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne on this day in 1996. His level of communication through the dynamics of his music, vocals, lyrics, guitar playing and reportif built to something of a spiritual communion. I know those that witnessed him would agree. That night after the show he had invited me to work with him on his next album. Unfortunately, I never saw him again but he left a tantalising legacy.

I PLAYED AT WESTERN SPRING STADIUM, AUCKLAND, NZ WITH LED ZEPPELIN

On this day in 1972, I played with Led Zeppelin at the Western Spring Stadium - a natural amphitheatre in Auckland.

As a rule, in the early 70s, bands were not going to New Zealand following Australia because of the cost involved. I was really up for it as my memories were rich following the February 1967 Roy Orbison, Yardbirds and The Walker Brothers Tour of Australia and New Zealand.

During that ‘67 tour in Auckland, a certain Clive Coulson was the singer in the opening band called The Mods and he was later to become road manager for Led Zeppelin two years later, in 1969.

'PHYSICAL GRAFFITI' BY LED ZEPPELIN WAS RELEASED

Today is the release of the epic double album Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin. Most of the titles were recorded with the Headley Grange experience; for example, the drums for Kashmir were recorded in the hall - the same location as When The Levee Breaks. I came up with the title for this album and the source music is a sample of some of my musical sketches - Wanton Song, Ten Years Gone and Sick Again - from that time.

Also on this day in 1996, I started the Australian tour in Sydney with Page and Plant.

I arrived in Perth with Led Zeppelin

On this day in 1972 Led Zeppelin arrived in Perth to begin an Australian tour, arriving from Bombay, and the customs decided to give us a lengthy examination and ended up confiscating four miniature drums that we had bought in India on the grounds of uncured animal skin – I guess they considered that a result!
