I PLAY THE HAMMERSMITH ODEON WITH OUTRIDER

Today the Outrider tour passed through London at the Hammersmith Odeon. The building dates back to 1932 in the classic art deco style of that period for prominent cinema theatres; but now a firm favourite of many groups to play. It was a sympathetic venue for this kind of show. It has been named Labatt’s Apollo, Carling Apollo, Hammersmith Apollo, the HMV Apollo. No matter what it is called, it will always be a bastion of rock and roll venues.

I PLAYED AT THE RITZ BALLROOM IN NEW YORK WITH OUTRIDER

We played two nights at The Ritz in New York on the Outrider tour, this was a funky venue that I really enjoyed playing and I know all the band did too. Although it was hot, sweaty and intense, both evenings produced great shows. One of those nights where you wish you could be in the audience! The members of Geffen Records were there too.

Also on this day in 2007, Led Zeppelin ‘Mothership’ was released in the UK with the iconic Shepard Fairey artwork.

Today in 1998, Page & Plant played on a second visit to Zagreb to which an acquaintance said ‘Why did you come back, no one ever comes back’.

‘WRITES OF WINTER’ WAS NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY AWARD

Well lo and behold, never having had a Grammy nomination from anything before, ‘Writes Of Winter’ from the Outrider album was mysteriously nominated in the instrumental category today in 1987. I wasn’t going to hold my breath and it’s just as well I didn’t because I still wouldn’t have a Grammy but hey- I got a nomination.

OUTRIDER PLAYED THE CENTRUM, WORCESTER, MA

We play at The Centrum Worcester, which was one of the best shows we played on the ‘88 tour. Robert Plant with his solo tour, had re-routed to start following up our dates and in fact, at Worcester, he played the following day on the 30th. He disguised himself and slipped in to see the show. It’s a shame he didn’t say hello. Read local newspaper review

Also on this day Chris Dreja photographed the members of Led Zeppelin for the back cover of Led Zeppelin I in 1968.

ON THIS DAY… 26 OCT 1987
I RECORDED BLUES ANTHEM WITH CHRIS FARLOWE

On this day in 1987, I recorded ‘Blues Anthem’ (If I Cannot Have Your Love, I’ll Sing The Blues) with Chris Farlowe‚ which appeared on the Outrider album. Chris was somebody who I first saw in about 1957, in the heats of the British Skiffle Championship, where he sang ‘All By Myself’ - a Johnny Burnette number that was rockabilly and not skiffle and he was extraordinary.
I had seen him play with his band ‘The Thunderbirds’ at the Ebbisham Hall in Epsom and he was truly one of the shining lights of the Southern music scene in the late ’50s and very early ’60s. He went on to build a substantial solo career and I had a great respect for his cavalier vocals. I played acoustic guitar on the hit single ‘Out Of Time’‚ so it wasn’t a surprise when I asked him to help me with his vocal talents on the Death Wish II album. I asked him again on the Outrider album. He sang on ‘Prison Blues’ and ‘Blues Anthem’ and both songs were written pretty much on the spot within two takes of each other. As an overdub to ‘Blues Anthem’, I incorporated the guitar-synth to emulate a string overdub.

I PLAY THE FRANK ERWIN CENTER IN AUSTIN, TX WITH OUTRIDER

I played The Frank Erwin Centre in Austin, Texas on the Outrider solo tour and Ronnie Lane, who now lived and performed locally, appeared with Bucks Burnett and photographer Mark Bowman. I hadn’t seen Ronnie for a while, but I toured with him on the ARMS tour in the UK and the US and it was so good to meet up with this extraordinary man and musician again. He is pictured here at the show.
