I PLAYED THE SURREY UNIVERSITY GREAT HALL WITH LED ZEPPELIN

At this point in 1968, I was living in my house in Pangbourne, West Berkshire. For some time prior to that, I had lived in Epsom in Surrey (when this location was called Ewell Technical College) and I had attended a handful of chemistry lessons at night school back in the day. This show was a good chance to catch up with some of my old pals from Epsom.

LED ZEPPELIN II WAS RELEASED

Led Zeppelin II was released today in 1969. It began with rehearsals at my home in Pangbourne and ‘Whole Lotta Love’ and ‘What Is and What Should Never Be’ were later recorded at London’s Olympic Studio Number 1 with George Chkiantz, who engineered the basic tracks and some guitar overdubs. This provided the foundation for the rest of the tracks to be recorded and overdubbed at various studios in America during our forthcoming tour. We recorded and overdubbed our way from West Coast to East Coast with tour-fuelled energy. I did the final mixes with Eddie Kramer at A&R studios in New York. The hedonistic mix of ‘Whole Lotta Love’ was to pioneer the radio success of the album.

This promo clip of ‘Whole Lotta Love’ is circa the Mothership album.

I PLAYED LOLLAND AND ROSKILDE WITH LED ZEPPELIN

This is the second day of the Scandinavian tour, where we were fulfilling some old Yardbirds commitments. We could explore and finesse our material and the set that had been rehearsed at my home in Pangbourne, England. After the short tour of Scandinavia we were due to go to Olympic Studios in London to record what would be Led Zeppelin I. Roskilde was to emerge as a major festival site and is to this day.
