LED ZEPPELIN II WAS RELEASED

Led Zeppelin II was released today in 1969. It began with rehearsals at my home in Pangbourne and ‘Whole Lotta Love’ and ‘What Is and What Should Never Be’ were later recorded at London’s Olympic Studio Number 1 with George Chkiantz, who engineered the basic tracks and some guitar overdubs. This provided the foundation for the rest of the tracks to be recorded and overdubbed at various studios in America during our forthcoming tour. We recorded and overdubbed our way from West Coast to East Coast with tour-fuelled energy. I did the final mixes with Eddie Kramer at A&R studios in New York. The hedonistic mix of ‘Whole Lotta Love’ was to pioneer the radio success of the album.

This promo clip of ‘Whole Lotta Love’ is circa the Mothership album.

I PLAYED THE SECOND NIGHT AT THE BUDOKAN WITH LED ZEPPELIN

During the first tour of Japan, Led Zeppelin was to play two nights at Budokan. Between visits to club Byblos, Tokyo Hilton and the Budokan Hall, some good music and concerts were performed for the Japanese audience who were so respectful, quiet and attentive during the songs. This was interesting, because we could hear each other perfectly and we could explore the music in greater depth, giving us a chance of a serious musical work out. We played ‘Your Time Is Gonna Come’ in the medley section of ‘Whole Lotta Love’, the only time we ever played it in that context. It is interesting how well we played and were prepared to step up to the precipice under these quite analytical conditions.

This performance was recorded, as were my early impressions on a newly aquired Super 8 cine-camera (no audio).

ON THIS DAY… 24 AUG 2008

On this day in 2008, I performed at the Olympic closing ceremony at Beijing, where the baton was passed on, so to speak, to London 2012. The cast members had been secretly rehearsing in London and Beijing. Armed with the double-decker bus, ballet, hip hop dancers and David Beckham, Leona Lewis and I performed ‘Whole Lotta Love’, augmented by Phillip Shepherd’s string arrangement and Prenderescki-like swoops. Along with many, I had been intoxicated by Leona’s performances on The X Factor and I was curious as to how she would approach ‘Whole Lotta Love’. Her classy delivery was sultry and impeccable, and her visual performance, dazzling to say the least! This was without doubt, one of the high points of my career, and it was one happy man who performed with such a remarkable talent.

I played with Led Zeppelin in Frankfurt, Germany

During the 1970 Led Zeppelin tour of Europe, sandwiched between Essen and Berlin, I played Frankfurt with Led Zeppelin with its close proximity to US military bases. The audience always had a strong showing of those servicemen and women. Elvis Presley had been stationed at Friedberg whilst in the army and it’s rumoured that Elvis himself attended some shows in Frankfurt back in the day - it’s highly probable that we played ‘Frankfurt Special' that evening in the rock 'n' roll medley during 'Whole Lotta Love' to pay tribute to both Elvis, Frankfurt, and G.I. Blues. If we didn't play it that time, I think we played it every other time we played Frankfurt!

LED ZEPPELIN RECORDED THE JOHN PEEL SESSIONS AT MAIDA VALE, LONDON

'Whole Lotta Love' / 'What Is and What Should Never Be' / 'Communication Breakdown' / 'Travelling Riverside Blues’
We recorded this show at Maida Vale studio to promote ‘Led Zeppelin II’. In typical Led Zeppelin tradition ‘Travelling Riverside Blues’ was made up on the spot from a riff I had on the electric twelve string. We had reached a point at the BBC where you could overdub a solo over the initial track of the song. This helped a lot to give a more complete rendition of our material and I must say the BBC engineer Tony Wilson did a really good job for us on this day. The BBC producer was John Walters.
